BOLLING FAMILY REUNION, RICHMOND 2009 - UPDATE

Registration Form

The 2009 Reunion will be held October 8 (Thursday) to 10 (Saturday) at the Richmond Marriott Downtown with a series of great events planned for our Family members in Richmond.  The Marriott is centrally located in the downtown area where members can walk to the State Capitol, The Virginia State Library and other locations.  The schedule will remain basically the same as recent Reunions.  Limited shuttle service will be available for restaurants, shopping, and visiting the museums.

The BFA Board meeting will start at 12:00PM on Thursday, October 8 at the Reunion hotel.  It will be followed by the Family Reception in the hotel starting at 5:30PM with light refreshments and a cash bar.

Friday, October 9 will be the traditional Family Tour starting at 9AM.  Associate Director Randy Bell is making arrangements for an interesting day.  It will start with a walk to the State Capitol for a tour, followed by a visit to the Virginia State Library where we will be given insight into their treasures and searching for family information.  After a lunch at the Library, we will be transported to the Virginia Historical Society for a fascinating afternoon of Colonial and Virginia history.  In past years, we focused on Family sites and during our Family meeting; we will discuss what our members will be interested in for our 2011 Reunion in Williamsburg.  In 2007, we spent the day visiting Jamestowne Island and Jamestown Settlement, both wonderful sites to help us understand our Colonial ancestors. .  In 2005, we traveled to Goochland County and toured Orapax, Bolling Hall and the Cemetery, and Bolling Island Farm in the morning.  After a chicken salad lunch at the Clover Forest Plantation, we drove to Buckingham County and toured Chellowe, and drove by other Bolling Sites. In 2003, we toured Shirley Plantation, Weston Manor, Cobbs Cemetery, City Point Museum, Kippax, Cedar Level, and Mitchells (Bull Hill, with lunch at Weston Manor with the Hopewell Mayor and the President of Historic Hopewell.  In 2001, we toured Bolling related sites in Petersburg including Blandford Cemetery and the Bolling Mausoleum and had a reception at the Centre Hill Museum, a former Bolling home. In 1999, members visited Jamestowne and Williamsburg.

We will again ask the Virginia State Library to have a special Bolling Exhibit on display during the Reunion which will include items such as:

Will of Anna Bolling, Petersburg City Court Records, Chancery Causes, 1848-14

Bolling Family Genealogical Notes (bound volume), acc. 32662

Thomas Winston Bolling, WWI History Commission Questionnaire (includes a photograph of Ensign Bolling, commander of a submarine chaser during the war)

Dictionary of Virginia Biography, vol. 2 (opened to biographical entries on several Bollings)

We will also ask The Virginia Historical Society Museum of Virginia History to provide an exhibit related to our Family history.

For those who may not wish to participate in the Library and Museum activities, we will offer an option of an all day bus tour with a professional tour guide of the Richmond area. However, we will need at least 25 people to make that possible.

The Bolling Family Association Business Meeting will be held on Saturday at the hotel.  The major business activities will be the reports of the President, Secretary, and Treasurer and the election of three Board members.  The President and Treasurer of The Bolling Foundation will also report on the Bolling Foundation.  Family members will have an opportunity to speak and ask questions at this meeting.  The business meeting will be followed by the Family Genealogy Session, chaired by Family Genealogy Coordinator Larry Bowling.    Larry will report on the DNA Testing Program and the Major Family Groups Project.  There will also be updates on the Family Biographies Project, the Family Sites Project, the Bolling Family Association Genealogical Library located at the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and other topics.

If enough members sign up, we will repeat our special Saturday afternoon shorter Bus Tour of Richmond from 1PM to 4PM with a professional tour guide. The tour would include the Bolling Haxall House, Shockoe Valley (the oldest part of Richmond) including the Poe Museum and the Canal Walk, St. John’s Church, Libby Hill, The State Capitol Square and the Bell Tower (built by a Bolling)St. Paul’s Church, Court End, the White House of the Confederacy, the Valentine Museum, John Marshall House, the Virginia Sate Library, the Virginia Historical Society, Shockoe and Hollywood Cemeteries where Bollings are buried, Monument Drive with the statues of Southern Generals, and a mid-tour stop at the Virginia War Memorial where there are restroom facilities.

The Saturday night Family Banquet on will start at 7 PM with a cash bar reception and dinner following at 7:30PM.  As always, we will honor several of our members and enjoy the good fellowship of all our cousins.  Since this is a fun and social evening, we will not have a formal speaker.
